The highlight of our trip to Switzerland was the four days we spent in the Swiss Alps, based in charming Grindelwald at the Hotel Belvedere. The family-run Hotel Belvedere is an upscale property, with a great location just steps from the Grindelwald central train station, dramatic views of the Eiger mountain from the terrace, and fine dining onsite, but is also very welcoming to families with young kids and has so many family amenities that it’s one of the most kid-friendly properties I’ve ever stayed at. Read on for my detailed review of this lovely hotel.
Rooms at the Hotel Belvedere
Rooms at the Hotel Belvedere are clean, comfortable and quite spacious by European standards. We paid a bit more to upgrade to an Eiger view and thought it was well worth it. Our room had gorgeous, direct views of the mountain, and a huge terrace on which to relax and enjoy those views.
Dining Options at the Hotel Belvedere
The Hotel Belvedere has two main on-site restaurants, the Michelin-starred 1910 (which serves a six course tasting menu and does not permit children under the age of 12) and the elegant but still family-friendly Restaurant Belvedere. The latter is also where the hotel’s complimentary breakfast is served every morning, and it’s an expansive spread with European, American and Asian options. All with a scenic view, naturally.
We also had dinner in Restaurant Belvedere one night and were impressed with the food. They have special theme nights, including a Swiss fondue night, as well as an a la carte menu and salad bar add-on that are always available. There’s also a children’s menu, which features a pirate treasure-chest themed dessert.
Other dining options at Hotel Belvedere include a cocktail bar in the lobby, and the “Fondue Gondola,” where couples can have fondue for two in cozy old-timey gondolas that are parked on the hotel grounds.
Hotel Belvedere’s Pool and Wellness Options
Hotel Belvedere has a large heated pool (with mountain views) and indoor and outdoor jacuzzis, as well as a spa with sauna and steam rooms. The pools and jacuzzis are family-friendly until 6 pm and adults only after that. The spa also has a massage therapist you can book and I thought the massage I had here was good but not great.

I was so impressed with how many small touches Hotel Belvedere had to make kids feel welcome. From the more standard amenities like a small on-site playground and child-sized robes and slippers in the rooms, to more unique things like a kiddie “amuse bouche” made out of fruit in the restaurant and a souvenir rubber ducky, there were just so many little details that made the Hotel Belvedere feel so welcoming to kids and families and overall it’s one of the most kid-friendly properties I’ve stayed at.
